"...the self is a construction of both our own self-image
and the ways we are imagined by other people" - Robert Enright
Figurative painting is an artform capable of expressing, knowingly or unknowingly, much more than a realist rendering of an individual. Each artists interpretation of the same subject can vary greatly as their own biases can uniquely invent or distort the very same subject.
Dramatically or subtlely, the artist imposes his or her own experience, emotion and style. This can manifest itself in a number of ways whether it be focusing or emphasizing specific features, creating certain moods or perhaps imposing his or her own concept of self onto the individual they are representing in a portrait. While some artists work to overcome this challenge and create a pure representation, others succumb to the temptation and allow various themes to juxtapose themselves onto the canvas.
This is the concept explored in a group exhibition by four emerging artists presenting figurative work at AKA Artist Run Centre (members project) running from July 8th to 28th, 2001. The artists include Jason Mark, Ryan Schmidt, Susana Vera and Tammi Campbell. This group of artists are exhibiting a series of figurative portraits of each other and of themselves. The viewer will be left to discover the different styles and biases that come into play when one attacks the genre of figure painting.
